On This Day...To Catch A Thief (1955)

On this day in 1955, Cary Grant's 60th full length feature film was released at the Venice Film Festival.

Its official release was earlier in the month...its just that I missed it!!!!

Cary Grant plays John Robie, "The Cat", a reformed jewel thief who now lives on the French Rivera. Grace Kelly stars alongside as Frances Stevens.

It was Cary Grant's third film with director Alfred Hitchcock and his first film in colour!

With Grace Kelly, Jessie Royce Landis and John Williams.

Jessie Royce Landis would later play Cary Grant's mother in his last collaboration with Hitchcock, North by Northwest.

"Grant gives his role his assured style of acting, meaning the dialogue and the situations benefit."
- Weekly Variety

"Grant once again demonstrates he is the master of timing, getting laughs where a lesser talent would draw a blank." - Daily Variety

"...Cary Grant and Grace Kelly ideal in the romantic leads." - Los Angeles Times

On This Day...The Talk Of The Town (1942)

The Talk of the Town was Cary Grant's 41st full length feature film. It was also his second film with Jean Arthur.

Grant plays Leopold Dilg, hunted on a trumped-up murder and arson charge.

He hides in Nora Shelley's house (Jean Arthur), which she has just rented to austere law school dean Michael Lightcap (Ronald Colman).

"In Columbia's The Talk of the Town Producer-Director George Stevens successfully manages the ticklish chore of tucking in such strange bedfellows as zany comedy and social significance, rampant melodrama and quiet humor...the film owes much to the expert playing of the three co-stars. Miss Arthur and Grant have had more rewarding roles but play these with customary finesse." - Newsweek

With Jean Arthur and Ronald Colman.

On This Day...In Name Only (1939)

Today in 1939 saw the release of Cary Grant's 34th full length feature film and his last of the 1930's.

Cary Grant plays Alec Walker, a married man who falls in love with a widow, Julie(Carole Lombard).

His wife, Maida(Kay Francis), tries to save the marriage but only to keep hold of the family money.
When Alec becomes ill, which woman will pull him through?

"A mature, meaty picture, based on the novel Memory of Love....In Name Only has its many knowing touches deftly underscored by Director John Cromwell, brought out by a smoothly functioning cast." - Time

"This is a well-made depressing little picture of unhappy marriage...The picture is made quite creditably, by three people - Miss Carole Lombard, Mr. Cary Grant and Miss Kay Francis."
- Graham Greene, The Spectator

With Carole Lombard and Kay Francis.
